At the General Assembly of the Balkan Mountaineering Union (BMU), held in Bohinj, Slovenia on May 24, 2025, the official rulebook for the Balkan Mountain and Trail Running Championship was adopted. The rulebook defines the competition regulations, technical details, and disciplines in which the best mountain runners of the Balkans will compete.

Also, Serbia has been selected as the host of the inaugural Balkan Mountain and Trail Running Championship, which will take place from July 2 to 4, 2026, on Tara Mountain and in Bajina Bašta, within the Tara Ultra Trail event.

Disciplines

Seniors:

  • Vertical – 6 km with 1,020 m of elevation gain (average incline 10–15%)
  • Mountain Classic – 13.6 km with 550 m of elevation gain
  • Mountain Trail – 36 km with a minimum of 1,900 m of elevation gain

Juniors (aged 15–18):

  • Mountain Classic – 9 km with 330 m of elevation gain

The establishment of the Balkan Mountain and Trail Running Championship aims to promote and advance the development of mountain and trail running across the region.

This is a significant honor for the Mountaineering Federation of Serbia and Serbia, marking an important step forward in strengthening regional cooperation and elevating mountain running in the Balkans.
